Sean Minn & Eugene – Pre wedding shoot at La Perouse

Congratulations to Sean Minn and Eugene! The lovely couple tied the knot back home in Malaysia but before they went back we had a pre wedding photo shoot around La Perouse. It was a lovely day in Sydney with typical clear blue skies although, we had very strong wind throughout the whole shoot.

It proved to be a bit of a challenge at first as Sean Minn had trouble with her veil. We were all afraid that it may fly off with the wind! In the end, I think we made the best of it and I’ve also always wanted to do ‘veil shots’. We got a few of them and I was happy with the way it turned out.

Sonia and Dennis just got married yesterday(6th Dec 09)!! Congratulations guys! Now that the wedding is over, I can post up the photos we took from their prewedding sessions. Yes, we we took two weekends so we could get various shots from various locations

I’ve known both Sonia and Dennis for a good couple of years now when we were all still in university. We all connected through the Malaysian student societies back then and since we were all committee members, we actually worked together organising events too!

Having known them for some time before they got engaged (and now married!), naturally we had tons of fun during the shoot. Here are some of my favourite photos but stay tuned for the slideshow with lots more in my next post!

Sonia + Dennis – Teaser Photos

Teasers – either love them or hate them

I have two to share from separate shoots we did with Sonia and Dennis over two weekends. They actually wanted to keep all the photos as a surprise until their wedding later this year back in Malaysia. ‘Negotiations’ were made and they agreed to let me ‘release’ this one first

All I can say is this is only a minor indication of the ‘awesome-ness’ of the other photos to come so hang on guys!

Vanessa and Marcus’ Wedding on Film!

Shooting a wedding on film has been an idea I’ve always wanted to try for some time now. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to do so at a recent wedding with a friend and fellow photographer, Gemma Clarke. She asked me if I wanted to second shoot with her on a 12 hour wedding and of course I jumped at the opportunity! Here’s a huge thanks to you Gemma!

Very briefly, the camera used was a Hasselblad XPan II, panoramic and standard 35mm film camera loaded with Kodak E100VS slide film. What’s so special about this camera is that it takes a shot which is almost twice the length of a standard camera. I was initially writing a post to show the pictures here but then soon after I realized I had gone totally off topic. I started writing more about why I still shoot in film and why I love it so much. I have separated that post to another one so I’ll post that soon after I put this one up so stay tuned!

This will be my all time favourite panoramic portrait shot on film. Notice how panoramic, portrait and film don’t usually go together at all!

Florence + Ka Yoong in Sydney!

Florence and Ka Yoong were in Australia for holiday and so happen I was lucky enough for them to stumble upon my website. They wanted a casual and relaxed photoshoot so after several emails and weeks later, they were in Sydney which is their last stop of the trip. We made plans before for an outdoor shoot around Sydney’s landmarks but unfortunately temperatures plummeted into the single digit region over the last couple of days. The sunset that day was beautiful though and we had some really nice evening light. Coming from Malaysia with a 30C climate all year round, it proved to be too much for them so we moved to our backup location at the Queen Victoria Building (QVB).

After the shoot was done we had a great dinner together at Kansai for some all you can eat japanese dinner in the CBD. We also played tour guides for awhile showing them around Sydney and recommending places to eat and visit. Thanks for also buying us dinner guys!

Being a Malaysian myself, we had a lot of fun during the shoot and catching up on things going on back home. Naturally we had a lot in common and I can tell that we’ll be keeping in touch in the future. I hope we made your trip to Australia a much more memorable one!

Alison + Shaun’s Engagement Party pictures

This last Saturday – 04/04/09 I had the great privilege to photograph Alison and Shaun’s engagement party at the parents’. They had their friends and family members over for what was a great night of celebration. I’m sure you all had fun and so did we – you guys were awesome in front of the camera!

I also feel I should share this with you all, Alison works for the RSPCA in Yagoona and Shaun is a fireman at the Cambelltown Fire Station! They’re both really wonderful people and what they do for a living is truly admirable. I should also mention that they both met 13 years ago!

Thanks so much for having us there and for taking care of us even when you didn’t have to

Behind the Scenes with Jaydee + Clara

Hey guys, I just went through the behind the scene pictures taken by Aaron and picked a few. I hope these will provide some idea of how I work and interact with clients during a shoot. For engagement or portrait sessions like Jaydee and Clara’s, our main objective is to get some kick ass photos for your own personal use, be it to display at your wedding reception, printed and hung on a wall at home or just to add to your collection

The other main objective would of course be to enjoy a fun day out with your significant other! This is your chance to be the models for the day but in a fun, relaxed environment where we photograph you just being YOU! It’s no different than say heading to the bowling alley or driving range except you get photos to take home later

That said, I hope this post will also be beneficial for other photographers out there to gain an insight on how we work and the equipment we use to get the images from the last session . I have always been very interested to see how other photographers work and so I’m sharing this with you guys in hopes you will find it just as interesting if not helpful in some way.

Like a car engine, it has to be warmed up properly for optimum performance. Humans are not that different in this regard so take the time to allow the couple to get comfortable and warm up to you. Have a chat with them about your style and guide them along the way

For engagement or portrait sessions like this, you will have to take charge and guide them with the poses. When they have a laugh about how weird it feels, they’re probably feeling comfortable and usually good to go That way you get very natural photos and almost candid looking at times.

For off camera lighting, it is best to expose for the background and shoot in manual for full control of exposure levels. The flash has to be set to manual power too and adjusted appropriately for proper fill lighting

My setup for off camera lighting – Canon 580EX II flash connected to a Pocket Wizard II transceiver and a Benro carbon fiber monopod as my lighting stick

A much cheaper way to achieve some amazing fill lighting during the day is to use a reflector

Chimping session after getting a great shot. This can sometimes encourage the couple to do better and be more adventurous…

My favourite combination for portraits – Canon 5D Mark II and 70-200 2.8 IS

Apparently I look like a cyborg here with my wireless flash trigger eyepiece

It’s an extremely heavy setup so whenever possible, lean on a rock for added stability and comfort

As the sun was setting we moved to a location where we could capture the beautiful sky. More off camera lighting here for foreground fill

In this pic you can also see the crowd gathered towards the end of the bridge, facing what I believe was a comet or something else in the sky

And to end this behind the scene series, a flash fired into an umbrella group shot with the 5D II just for fun

Yeay, the pictures are finally here! I haven’t been this excited for some time to show off my latest work as this is the first time we worked with off camera lighting. Jaydee and Clara were so great to work with and with little to no warming up they were good to go! Man, when I say good to go, they were really good to go – you’ll see why later. It makes the economy crisis a joke considering how much ice they’ve melted and contributed to the global warming crisis!

I took a little longer than I usually do with the post processing . I was creating a new preset style – which I hope you guys will like. I used it for a few of the shots towards the end of this post Also don’t forget, CLICK the image for a LARGER version!

JD and Clara were smooching sooo loudly I could hear it even with my long zoom lens that I had to say something! These series of pictures is an attempt to show their reaction

Not sure if you guys can see but there’s some tongue action going on here!!!

I think the streak on the left is a comet or some space object falling into earth’s atmosphere. I thought it was a jet at first but then I later remembered there was a whole bunch of other photographers there photographing the foreign object.

This was one Godzilla of a post but I didn’t want to exlude any of my other selections here. I had a tough time choosing my favourites as I always struggle and this was certainly no exception! Thanks again to Jaydee and Clara for your time and patience. It was a blast working with you guys and always a pleasure to be around both of you
